Laser Hair Removal in East Ham, London

East Ham is one of the most ethnically diverse neighbourhoods in London, and the majority of clients who walk into our clinic have South Asian, Black African, Caribbean or Middle Eastern skin. That single fact shapes how we do laser hair removal here: settings that are safe and effective on Fitzpatrick types IV to VI are the norm for us, not the exception.

Older IPL machines and generic salon devices target pigment indiscriminately, which is why they can burn or leave pale and dark patches on deeper skin tones. We use a long-pulse Nd:YAG wavelength that travels past the surface melanin and heats the follicle instead, alongside contact cooling to keep the skin comfortable throughout.

Why deeper skin tones need a different laser

Hair removal lasers work by heating melanin inside the hair follicle until the growth structures stop producing. On very fair skin almost any wavelength will find the hair rather than the skin. On brown and Black skin there is melanin everywhere, so a short wavelength delivers heat into the surrounding tissue too — the cause of blistering and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

The 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelength penetrates deeper and has far lower melanin absorption at the surface, which makes it the wavelength dermatologists recommend for Fitzpatrick IV–VI. We combine it with lower fluence over more sessions rather than chasing fast results with aggressive settings, and every course begins with a patch test 48 hours beforehand.

It also treats pseudofolliculitis barbae — the razor bumps and ingrown hairs common on the beard line and neck for Black men — which is one of the most requested treatments at our East Ham location.

Who treats you

Treatments are carried out in person by Uthaya Skinglow's practitioner team, who assess your skin type, hair colour, hormonal history and any medication before a single pulse is fired. Conditions common in our local community, such as PCOS-driven facial hair, are discussed openly and planned as a longer maintenance course rather than a fixed six-session package that quietly under-delivers.

You will see the same practitioner across your course, so settings are adjusted based on how your skin actually responded last time rather than a generic protocol sheet.

What a session in East Ham looks like

Book a complimentary consultation and patch test first. Shave the area 24 hours beforehand — do not wax, thread or epilate for four weeks, as the follicle needs to be present for the laser to work. Avoid sunbeds and fake tan for two weeks.

On the day, the area is cleaned, protective eyewear is fitted and the handpiece is passed over the skin in overlapping rows. Most people describe it as a warm elastic band flick. An upper lip takes about five minutes; a full pair of legs takes closer to an hour.

Afterwards the skin can look slightly pink and bumpy around the follicles for a few hours. Use a fragrance-free moisturiser and SPF 50 daily, skip the gym, sauna and hot showers for 24 hours, and expect shedding hairs to push out over the following one to two weeks.

How many sessions you will need

Hair grows in cycles and only follicles in the active anagen phase respond, so a course is always required. Most areas need six to eight sessions spaced four to six weeks apart for the face and six to eight weeks for the body, with occasional top-ups after that.

Coarse dark hair responds best. Grey, white, red and very fine blonde hair contains little pigment and will not respond to laser — we will tell you that at consultation rather than sell you a course that cannot work.

FAQs

Laser Hair Removal in East Ham — your questions

Is laser hair removal safe on brown or Black skin?

Yes, when the right wavelength is used. We treat Fitzpatrick IV–VI with a 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser at conservative settings plus contact cooling, and every client has a patch test 48 hours before their first full session so we can confirm how your skin reacts.

How much does laser hair removal cost in East Ham?

Cost depends on the area and the number of sessions, so we price it at your free consultation at Unit 10 Market Place, 5 Pilgrims Way, East Ham E6 1HW. Small areas such as the upper lip are the lowest cost; full-body courses are quoted as a package.

Can I have laser hair removal if I have PCOS?

Yes. PCOS-related facial and body hair is hormonally driven, so laser reduces density and thickness significantly but usually needs ongoing maintenance sessions rather than a fixed course. We plan for that from the start and are happy to work alongside your GP's treatment plan.

Do I need to shave before my appointment?

Shave the area 24 hours before. Do not wax, thread, pluck or epilate for four weeks beforehand — those methods remove the follicle the laser needs to target.

Does it hurt?

Most clients describe a warm snap against the skin. The handpiece has integrated cooling, and the shorter the area the quicker it is over — an upper lip is done in around five minutes.
